Quadra Q100 "Aerobatic" 1997/98 model

For basic info go here.

The Q100 "Aerobatic", not to be confused with other Q100's, is a development specifically set at aerobatics and swinging big props.
Changes include a different reed block, different carb and a remapped ignition.
This optimizes throttle "resolution" and midrange running characteristics as well as big prop swinging ability.

I bought the Q100 "Aerobatic" part way through the 97 flying season to replace the 3W-120 I had had on my 35% Carden Cap.

Having flown it for about 350 flights, these are my findings.

Props:
Menz standard 26-10 @ 6300 to 6500 depending on season and alt.
Mejzlik 28-10 @ 6100 to 6300 depending on season and alt.
Mejzlik 26-10, tried but considered to small.
Bolly 26-10/12, tried but not liked because of weight.

Idle:
With either of the above mentioned props, the idle was 1600 and stable.
No loading with prolonged idle or coming up of idle

Midrange:
Very smooth, no gurgling in unloaded condition in flight.
Very smooth in low throttle rolling maneuvers with no tendency to load up as so many do.
RPM's hold very constant at any throttle setting.

Top end:
Very strong, a class leader ( from all the figures I have seen ).

Muffler:
The motor comes with a baffled steel muffler that actually works.

Fuel:
A 32oz tank gives a safe 20 minute flight time.
93 octane pump gas, Amsoil at 100-1.

Vibration:
Surprisingly low.
If I had to categorize it, I say it was between the 3W-120 and the 3W-80.
Not at all like the Sachs 5.8 derivative motors that have given the big singles such a bad reputation.
I hard mount mine.

Weight:
6.4lbs bare.

Comments:
This motor represents excellent value and is an ideal motor to power Aerobatic planes in the 25 to 30lbs range.
As with most reed valve induction motors, the low end torque is really strong, in this case making it possible to swing the 28" prop's.
It's throttle response is the best I have seen to date, substantially better than the 3W-120's and 3W-80's I've flown.
