Tips
for Giant Scale Planes

- Wing servo wire
in foam wing
Go ahead build that wing don't worry about how to thread the wire
through, just make sure you have enough clearance for the plug.
To get the wire through, take your shop vac and some kite string,
suction on the sevo bay hole. Drop some string at the wing core. make sure
you hold on to the string or it will all go into the shop vac. Now fish
your wire.............Dan Ross
- Secure all
nuts and bolts
If you are new to large aircraft and motors you are soon to learn that
vibration is one of your worst enemies. Things that you think can't
possibly come loose often times do.
Check all nuts and bolts frequently!
You will do yourself a BIG favor if you make sure that all screws, nuts,
and bolts are securely fastened - not securely tightened, but fastened.
This is especially true when a metal screw/bolt is threaded into a metal
nut or fixture.
Fastening involves using compounds or adhesives (LOCTITE, RPV, PFM, CA,
etc) on screw/bolt threads, or using special locking nuts such as those
with nylon inserts. In extreme environments or when resonance is "just
right" safety wire may be required. High-temp RTV (silicone rubber)
works well in high temperature areas.

- Bolts that wont
fall out
From Loews type stores, you can get rubber backed washers.
I use these on the cowl and canopy bolts. They are nice because they hold
the bolts in a way that they don't vibrate loose and the rubber backing is
easier on the paint than bare metal....Branwell
- Prop slippage
In the case where you have a single bolt hub, prop slippage can be a problem.
A simple cure for this is to use sticky back sandpaper, any grit, I use 240,
and stick it to one of the contact surfaces....Branwell
- How to servo
wire
Another method for fishing servo wires through wings, especially ribbed wings,
is to go to the hardware store and get about three feet of the smallest beaded
chain you can find. You know, the stuff like on the pull chain of your ceiling
fan, only smaller. Drop this chain in your servo bay and rock the wing back
and forth and this chain finds its way down like water. Tie a string or your
wire to it and pull it right through....Anthony Greco
- Wing Panel servo
connections
Assembling a model at the field can be made a little easier by mounting your
servo extentions in charge jack mounts. This way you can plug and un plug
these wires with one hand. Leaving your other hand free to support your wing
or anything else you might need it for.
